New Equipment at Bedford Hospital Means More Men Treated, Faster

Aug 04, 2026 | Return|

Bedford Hospital can now run nine prostate treatments every single Tuesday, without sharing an operating theatre with another department. That's the difference new equipment has made this month.

What was donated

Bedford Hospital has taken delivery of an ultrasound scanner, a biopsy chair, and a full set of stirrups. The equipment was partly funded by the Bedford Prostate Cancer Support Group, working alongside GFCT, and was warmly welcomed by hospital staff at a handover event attended by clinicians, support group members, and families.

Why it matters

Before this donation, the hospital's prostate team had to share an operating theatre to carry out biopsies and related procedures. That meant limited slots, longer waits, and pressure on staff to fit treatments around other surgical demands.

With the new scanner and biopsy chair in place, the hospital can now dedicate every Tuesday to prostate treatments, running nine procedures in a day without needing theatre space elsewhere in the hospital. That's a direct, practical improvement to how quickly men in Bedford can be diagnosed and treated.

A shared effort

The Bedford Prostate Cancer Support Group played a key role in funding the equipment, and the hospital has been quick to recognise the difference it's made. Staff described themselves as "extremely grateful" for the new kit.

Our Founder Graham Fulford and CEO Susan Hart visited Bedford Hospital to see the equipment in use and meet the team who'll be relying on it week after week.
